Death is a Door

Death is a DOOR
We stand on the shadowed side of it
Beyond is light and life
The beginning of the rest —

Death is a TRAP
A snare, a net
All men swim toward it to be caught and taken
High birth or low
They share a common goal

Death is RELIEF
From physical long suffering
A heart over-boiling with pain
A mind failing
Relief and release
The newest beginning that remains new,
Forsaking regret

Death is a GHOST
Thick and shrouded
Mysterious and final
Passing over each age and empire
Knowing every Son of Adam and Daughter of Eve
Burying fear or confusion or resentment deep into futilely resistant souls

Death is a THEIF
Afraid of neither dark nor light
Stealing minutes and moments, unchecked lists and dreams that still linger in a big sky
Draining confidence in what waits behind its drawn curtain
Though hope yet peeks through, beckoning quietly

Death is a GIFT
To sheep following their shepherd
A bridge over deep waters
A darning of sacred fabric
Where the shadow of life gives way to an everlasting present
In the presence of One who poured love over law

Death is a DOOR
It does not revolve
As the heel of your second boot passes over its threshold,
All is resolved
Heaven will hold still — breath and body– for one split second
What will you have chosen?
What will it be?

  1. You’re an amazing and insightful writer and I’m do very proud of you. It’s an honor to be your mom. Aldo your savvy insight and editing skills has made Vera readable for the broad audience and I would very much like to add your name as co-author and finish Vera as co-writers. It’s your editing skillz that have refreshed the text and steered the content from an otherwise rabbit trail that would’ve been relegated to a reference book rather than a story. Love you!! And we simply must begin on Josephine.

  2. I ended up on this site after a comment from your husband on Facebook about your new book on Amazon, “Quick to Listen.” You are such a talented writer and the insight of this poem is amazing. God has blessed you with a wonderful skill, keep on using it to inspire others. I love everything you have written!

    1. Thank you so much! I have not written much in the recent past between all the fallout last year from three deaths within eight months in our family circle on top of all the regular life things everyone juggles, but your words are encouraging! I miss getting it all out “on paper” and plan to dive back in more regularly in the fall. Thank you for reading!
